Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our guided mountain expeditions and hiking services.

We offer routes suitable for various fitness levels and abilities. Our beginner-friendly trails require basic fitness and no prior hiking experience, covering gentle terrain with moderate elevation gain. Intermediate routes involve longer distances, steeper ascents, and require reasonable stamina. Advanced expeditions are designed for experienced hikers comfortable with challenging terrain, extended walking hours, and variable weather conditions. During booking, our guides assess your fitness level and recommend appropriate routes. We can also customize itineraries to match your group's capabilities, ensuring everyone enjoys the experience safely.

Essential items include sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, moisture-wicking clothing in layers, waterproof jacket and trousers, and a backpack (25-35 litres). Bring a water bottle (minimum 1.5 litres), sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. For day hikes, pack energy snacks and a basic first aid kit. We provide trekking poles, navigation equipment, and emergency supplies. Multi-day expeditions require sleeping bags and personal items, though we can arrange equipment rental if needed. Before departure, you'll receive a detailed packing list specific to your chosen route and season.

All our guides hold recognized qualifications including Mountain Leader awards and wilderness first aid certifications. Our team collectively has over 80 years of guiding experience across mountain ranges in Scotland, Wales, the Lake District, and international destinations. Each guide undergoes continuous professional development and maintains current safety certifications. They possess extensive knowledge of local flora, fauna, geology, and history, enriching your experience beyond simple navigation. Our guides are trained in risk assessment, emergency procedures, and group management, ensuring your safety remains the priority throughout the expedition.

Safety is our absolute priority. Our guides monitor weather forecasts continuously and assess conditions throughout the trek. If severe weather threatens, we may modify the route, postpone the start, or turn back if already underway. Alternative lower-level routes are always planned as backup options. In cases where we cancel due to unsafe conditions, we'll reschedule at no additional cost or provide a full refund. Mountain weather can change rapidly, and our guides are trained to make decisions based on current conditions rather than predetermined schedules. We'd rather disappoint temporarily than compromise safety.

We maintain small group sizes to ensure personalized attention and minimal environmental impact. Standard groups range from 4 to 8 participants per guide, allowing for effective communication and flexible pacing. For technical routes or challenging terrain, we limit groups to 6 people maximum. Private expeditions can be arranged for individuals, families, or corporate groups of any size, with additional guides assigned as needed. Smaller groups enable us to adapt to varying abilities within the party, take time for photography and wildlife observation, and maintain the wilderness experience that makes mountain hiking special.

For multi-day expeditions, we offer different packages depending on the route. Mountain hut-based treks include accommodation in traditional bothies or alpine lodges, with hot meals prepared by our guides or facility staff. Wild camping expeditions include all camping equipment, with guides preparing nutritious meals using portable stoves. We cater to dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, and allergen-free options when notified in advance. Day hikes typically don't include meals, though we can arrange packed lunches from local suppliers. All packages include hot drinks throughout the day and emergency rations.

Cancellations made more than 14 days before the scheduled trek receive a full refund minus a £25 administrative fee. Cancellations between 7-14 days incur a 50% charge, while those within 7 days are non-refundable unless we can fill your place from our waiting list. Weather-related cancellations initiated by us result in full refunds or free rescheduling. We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover unforeseen personal circumstances. If you need to reschedule due to illness or emergency, we'll work flexibly to find alternative dates within the same season. Group bookings have slightly different terms, which are outlined in the booking confirmation.

We welcome families and offer routes suitable for children aged 8 and above, depending on their fitness and hiking experience. Our family-friendly trails feature shorter distances, gentler gradients, and plenty of interesting stops to maintain engagement. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For younger or less experienced children, we recommend starting with half-day introductory hikes before attempting full-day expeditions. Our guides are experienced in working with young hikers and adapt the pace accordingly. Private family bookings allow us to tailor the experience specifically to your children's ages and abilities, incorporating educational elements about nature and mountain safety.

Our primary operating areas include the Scottish Highlands (Ben Nevis, Cairngorms, Glencoe), Snowdonia in Wales, and the Lake District in England. We also run expeditions in the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, and Brecon Beacons. Each region offers unique landscapes, from dramatic granite peaks to rolling moorland. Seasonal schedules vary by location, with some high-altitude routes accessible only during summer months. We also organize international expeditions to the Alps, Pyrenees, and Norwegian fjords for those seeking new challenges. Custom itineraries can combine multiple regions or focus intensively on a specific mountain range based on your interests and available time.

We follow Leave No Trace principles strictly, ensuring all groups minimize their environmental impact. This includes packing out all waste, staying on designated paths to prevent erosion, and camping only in permitted areas. Our guides educate participants about local ecosystems and conservation efforts. We use biodegradable soaps, avoid disturbing wildlife, and maintain respectful distances from nesting sites. Group sizes are limited to reduce trail wear and preserve the wilderness experience for others. We partner with local conservation organizations and contribute a portion of our fees to habitat restoration projects. Sustainable practices aren't optional extras but fundamental to how we operate.

We carry comprehensive public liability insurance covering all guided activities. Our guides carry satellite communication devices for emergency contact in areas without mobile coverage, along with comprehensive first aid kits and emergency shelters. Before each expedition, we file route plans with local mountain rescue teams and conduct safety briefings covering terrain hazards, weather awareness, and emergency procedures. All participants must complete a health declaration form, allowing guides to be aware of any medical conditions. While we maintain high safety standards, we recommend participants arrange personal travel and medical insurance. Regular equipment inspections and guide training updates ensure we meet current safety standards.

About UrbanManageCore

Founded by experienced mountaineers with a shared passion for the peaks, we bring together expertise, safety standards, and genuine love for mountain exploration.

Our Journey

UrbanManageCore was established in 2015 by three certified mountain guides who met during an expedition in the Scottish Highlands. What started as weekend trips with friends evolved into a registered company dedicated to making mountain experiences accessible to everyone, from beginners taking their first steps on a trail to experienced hikers seeking challenging routes.

Over the past eight years, we have guided more than 2,400 individuals across various mountain ranges in the UK and Europe. Our team now consists of 12 qualified guides, each holding internationally recognized certifications including Mountain Leader (ML), International Mountain Leader (IML), and Winter Mountain Leader (WML) qualifications. Every guide has completed a minimum of 150 supervised expeditions before leading groups independently.

We operate throughout the year, adapting our routes to seasonal conditions. From the Lake District's gentle slopes to Snowdonia's rugged terrain, we design trips that match participants' fitness levels and experience. Our approach focuses on education – teaching navigation skills, weather assessment, and mountain safety protocols during every outing.
